After a gunman opened fire during Donald Trump’s campaign rally close to Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday night, the president survived an assassination attempt.
Trump was hurt in the attack and was carried offstage very soon, although he later said he was “fine.” Both the gunman and a rallygoer perished. The Secret Service reported that two additional attendees had serious injuries.
The suspect’s name is still pending, and the authorities haven’t determined why the incident occurred. Authorities from the Pennsylvania state police and the Federal Bureau of Investigations have announced that they are collaborating on an ongoing investigation.
From what we’ve learned, the shooting occurred:
Is Donald Trump OK?
Trump was hurt in the incident and taken to a local hospital shortly away, as seen by the footage, which showed blood pouring from his right ear. Shortly after, his campaign issued a statement claiming he was “fine.”
The former president after that claimed to have been “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear” on Trump’s social media network, Truth Social. As soon as I felt the bullet ripping through my skin and heard bullets and a zipping sound, I knew something was wrong. I became aware of what was happening when there was a lot of blood.
Officials claim that the gunfire at the Trump event is being looked into as a possible assassination attempt.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said that Trump had left the Butler, Pennsylvania, area by Saturday night. His intention to attend the Republican National Convention, which kicks off on Monday, has not changed, according to a statement issued following the shooting.
What happened at the rally?
Shortly after Trump took the stage Saturday night near Butler, Pennsylvania, a gunman opened fire during his event, at 6:15 p.m.
Many popping sounds could be heard in a video of the incident before Trump reached for his right ear. Agents from the Secret Service stormed the stage fast, shielding Trump from harm. A few moments later someone says “Shooter down,” and the Secret Service releases Trump. Visibly bleeding from the area around his right ear, the presumed Republican presidential nominee could be heard calling Secret Service officials to get his shoes as they began to carry him away to his motorcade. Trump also lifted his fist angrily toward the assembly.
Pittsburgh Special Agent in Charge Kevin Rojek called the attack an “assassination attempt” in a news conference late Saturday night.
Was anyone else injured?
Yes, the Secret Service did indeed kill the suspected gunman. According to the Secret Service and Pennsylvania state authorities, two other male attendees were critically injured in the incident, and one male audience member died.
What do we know about the shooter?
Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, has been named by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as the “subject involved” in the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
Based on the voter records of the state, Crooks, a resident of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, was registered as a Republican.
Is there still a danger to the public?
Although the investigation is still in progress, Lt. Col. George Bivens of the Pennsylvania State Police stated that there is “no reason to believe that there is any other existing threat out there.” Late on Saturday, investigators stated that they will keep looking into whether the suspect acted alone.
What happens next after this incident?
Together, Pennsylvanian and FBI officials will carry out their ongoing investigation, with the FBI spearheading the probe and local law enforcement addressing the rallygoers’ injuries and homicide.
When the FBI has “100% confidence” in the suspect, Rojek said, the identification will be made public. He also noted that the investigation into the shooting’s purpose is still ongoing.
The area was designated as an “active crime scene” by authorities.
Anyone present at the event or with information about the incident is urged to come forward by law police.
Regarding Trump, he will get his third nomination as the party’s presidential candidate at the Republican National Convention, which gets underway in Milwaukee on Monday. Trump declared on Saturday night that he would still go to the convention despite the incident.
