Lamborghini CEO Unveils New Hybrid Supercar: How the 'YOLO' Effect is Driving Sales Growth

Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini CEO, is likely to be remembered as one of the most significant figures in the history of Italian luxury automakers.

The new Temerario, like the Revuelto, packs a lot of hybrid power

Much has happened during his two tenure at Lamborghini, from launching the Gallardo supercar in the early 2000s to shepherding the Urus SUV onto the market 15 years later to a stunning sales success.

With the much-loved Huracán supercar set to retire, Winkelmann’s most recent release is the Temerario, the Huracán’s replacement.

Though the Temerario loses the much-loved V-10 naturally aspirated engine that powered the Huracán, Winkelmann believes its progression will maintain the fervour of Lamborghini enthusiasts. The new Lamborghini’s V8 bi-turbo engine can still rev to an incredible 10,000 RPM.

That, combined with three electric motors — two on the front axle and one between the engine and the gearbox — provides 907 horsepower, allowing the Temerario to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 212 mph.

You have to be more performing than the previous generation, including handling behavior, so the weight-to-power ratio is critical for our success, because this is one of Lamborghini’s distinguishing features,” Winkelmann told Yahoo Finance from the Lamborghini stand at the Quail event during Monterey Car Week.

Winkelmann believes that the hybrid powertrain’s capacity to cut pollutants through its battery system while also improving performance with electric motors is “the right direction for Lamborghini.”

While his fingers are “crossed,” he said, sales data show the Italian brand, which is part of the Volkswagen (VWAGY) empire, is one of the few success stories in the luxury car sector.

One does not have to follow in the footsteps of a renowned rival like Ferrari if it can cultivate its own organic enthusiasm through bold design for its supercars like the Temerario and cutting-edge powertrains that now include hybrid power in all of its models. Since Gallardo’s release 20 years ago, Winkelmann has demonstrated that this is indeed achievable.

“This year is going in a perfect way, we had another record first six months in 2024,” Winkelmann points out. “So, if things continue like this, the year 2024 will be a very good one for Lamborghini.”

Can the YOLO impact persist for the rest of the year and beyond? Winkelmann and Lamborghini think they have the appropriate mix in place.
