According to the Pentagon, to protect Israel from potential attacks by Iran and its allies, the United States would send more warships and fighter jets to the Middle East.
Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas and a prominent figure in Hezbollah’s armed organization in Lebanon, was assassinated in Iran, causing significant tensions in the area.
The Pentagon stated that missile defense forces were now more prepared to deploy and reaffirmed its “ironclad” commitment to protecting Israel.
Three days of national mourning have been designated by Iran’s leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, who has threatened to exact “harsh punishment” on Israel for the death of Haniyeh.
The leader of Hamas was assassinated on Wednesday in Tehran. Iran, through its operatives in Gaza, attributed the bombing to Israel, which has not responded.
Haniyeh, 62, was regarded by many as the general head of Hamas and was instrumental in efforts to bring about a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict.
His passing occurred a few hours after Israel declared that it had slain Iran’s leading military operative in Lebanon, Hezbollah, Fuad Shukr.
According to a Pentagon statement, the expanded deployments will “ensure the US is prepared to respond to various contingencies, improve US force protection, and increase support for the defense of Israel.”
According to the statement, additional cruisers and destroyers equipped with ballistic missile defense would be deployed.
Before Iran’s drone and missile attack on Israel on April 13, the US military had likewise increased deployments. Almost all of the approximately 300 drones and missiles fired were shot down by Israel and its allies.
Israel has not made any direct comments regarding the attack that killed Haniyeh. Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister, however, said that his nation has recently dealt “crushing blows” to its adversaries, including Shukr’s death in Beirut among them.
“Tough days lie ahead… we have heard threats from all sides,” he forewarned the Israelis. We are equipped to handle any situation.
According to US officials, escalation was not inevitable, according to Pentagon spokesman Sabrina Singh.
“I think we are being very direct in our messaging that certainly we don’t want to see heightened tensions and we do believe there is an off-ramp here and that is that ceasefire deal,” Singh stated.
According to Mr. Netanyahu on Friday, an Israeli delegation will visit Cairo in the coming days to negotiate a truce in Gaza and the release of the hostages.
Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, which claimed 1,200 lives, ignited the conflict. According to the health ministry controlled by Hamas, Israel replied with an ongoing military offensive in Gaza that has claimed around 40,000 lives. jets jets jets jets
