Republican Donald Trump defeated Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris easily, regaining the White House in an election victory that would undoubtedly change America’s policies and economic links with the rest of the globe.
The 47th and only the second candidate in U.S. history to win nonconsecutive terms in the White House is Trump, who was elected as the 45th president in 2016. As surveys had predicted for weeks, his historic victory shattered expectations for a drawn-out vote count decided by extremely narrow margins.
Congratulating the president-elect on his election, Harris spoke with him on Wednesday. President Biden, who Trump also spoke with, “emphasized the importance of working to bring the country together and expressed his commitment to ensuring a smooth transition,” according to the White House announcement. The former president was asked to visit the White House “in the near future” by Biden.
After a campaign of opposing statements that widened the nation’s rift, Trump, 78, retook the White House on Wednesday by attaining more than the 270 Electoral College votes required to win the presidency, according to Edison Research’s projections.
Trump was on course to win the majority of the popular vote, sweep the battleground states, and surpass his prior support among young people and some minority groups, including Latino men. The Republican party also secured a Senate majority with Trump at the top of the ticket, and it appeared like it would be able to hold onto power in the House by a slim margin.
While Harris was trying to disassociate herself from an unpopular Biden amid a contentious and costly campaign that revealed the country’s profound ideological divides, Trump questioned people if they were better off under his first presidency. In an effort to appear strong to a populace desperate for change, Trump frequently used depressing language and threatened retaliation on his political rivals during his third consecutive run for the presidency.
How Trump’s comeback was the biggest in the history of politics
Trump’s unexpected victory over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016 was not a fluke, as seen by the victory, which solidifies him as a historic political figure who triumphed despite his bravado and baseless accusations of election fraud that alienated many.
Trump declared during a celebration early on Wednesday in West Palm Beach, Florida, that “this is a magnificent victory for the American people.”
Thanking voters for returning him to the White House, he reiterated his campaign promise to boost the economy and take care of other issues, promising to fight for all citizens. He declared, “This will be America’s golden age.”
Speaking at Howard University, Harris said she offered to assist Trump and his team in the transition and the peaceful handover of power. They owed their allegiance to the US Constitution, she argued, not to a president or a political party.
She declared, “I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign, but I do concede this election.”
The former president, like in his first victory, relied on significant support in rural America to secure his victory. He was pronounced the victor as of Wednesday by the Associated Press in the battlegrounds of North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin; he also had an advantage in Nevada and Arizona. Electoral votes for Trump totaled 292.
Voters from the working class also overwhelmingly supported Trump. He was able to win over 55% of voters without a college degree, according to the AP VoteCast survey, which involved over 120,000 registered voters nationwide. That was higher than the 51% he received in his 2020 bid against Biden.
While Harris was burdened by unfavorable opinions about the Biden administration’s economy, she also found it difficult to unite the diverse coalition that helped Biden win the 2020 election.
After assuming the Democratic nomination after Biden’s withdrawal, Harris increased the level of competition in the contest. The president resigned following a poor debate performance with Trump on June 27 that raised concerns about Biden’s advanced age (81) and cognitive abilities. According to polls, Trump had a significant lead over Biden, but Harris, who aspired to become the first female president of the United States, swiftly closed the gap.
The 78-year-old Trump, who became well-known as a flashy real estate tycoon and reality TV personality in New York City, is now the oldest person to be elected president. He was only a few months older than Biden when he was elected in 2020.
The only other former president to win the White House following a previous reelection loss is Grover Cleveland, a Democrat from New York who won the second election in 1892.
The next vice president will be 40-year-old Sen. JD Vance. The junior senator from Ohio is expected to be a strong candidate for the GOP nomination in the future because of his ability to articulate the principles of Trumpism, frequently with greater discipline than the movement’s leader. Trump will have to leave the White House after four years due to a constitutional limit.
Trump survived two assassination attempts, and the race’s outcome caps a historic summer and fall campaign season. Trump ran for office while he dealt with a number of legal issues, including as being charged with federal election meddling (he entered a not guilty plea) and being convicted on 34 felony counts in a state court for fabricating records to conceal hush money given to a porn star.
Trump might now carry out his promise to remove special counsel Jack Smith and have the cases dropped, which casts doubt on the election-interference charges and another federal case. The victory is anticipated to complicate Trump’s sentence in Manhattan later this month and to impede a Georgia prosecutor’s attempts to bring racketeering charges against Trump, which allege that he participated in a criminal plot to rescind the state’s 2020 election results.
Trump profited from a negative voter sentiment in spite of low unemployment. Nearly two-thirds of respondents to the last Wall Street Journal poll conducted prior to the election said that the country was moving in the wrong direction. Even while inflation has been declining, its agony had a lasting lingering effect that benefited Trump and damaged Harris.
Trump has changed the tone of the GOP over his nearly ten years in office, making it less aligned with the traditional conservative values of fiscal restraint and national security hawkishness and more populist. Over the next four years, Washington’s goals will undoubtedly be influenced by such shifts, which have reverberated from local party officials to Congress.
Trump and U.S. Senator JD Vance, his incoming vice president, are scheduled to officially take office on January 20, 2025, which is Inauguration Day. Trump has made it clear that he will give personal loyalty and top priority when it comes to filling his administration during his two-year campaign. Both passionate supporters, Musk and former presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., were offered positions in his government.
