CUSM (California University) welcomed 130 new medical students during the White Coat Ceremony. The students join the faculty to celebrate after receiving their coats and reciting the Hippocratic Oath.
COLTON, Calif.-(BUSINESS WIRE)-The California University of Science and Medicine (CUSM) held its yearly White Coat Ceremony today for 130 new medical students, their families, and friends. Ninety-eight per cent of incoming students come from California, with 31 per cent from the Inland Empire region.
While the White Coat ceremony is steeped in tradition, it is also a conscious recognition of the enormous obligations that come with becoming a physician,” stated Paul Lyons, MD, CUSM President and Dean. “The White Coat, along with the Hippocratic Oath, is a commitment to the ethical practice of medicine and a commitment to one’s patients and community.”
During the CUSM ceremony, Dr. Lyons and Dr. Prem Reddy, CUSM’s Founder and Chair of the Board, who also serves as the Founder, Chair, and CEO of Prime Healthcare, one of the nation’s premier health systems with 44 hospitals in 14 states, awarded each student with their white coat.
“Medicine is an honor and a blessing. In his remarks to students, Dr. Reddy stated that this ceremony represents the tremendous opportunity you will have to significantly enhance the lives of patients and families.
“The white coat is a symbol of the responsibility you hold and the trust that you will receive from those you serve.” The MD Class of 2028 will spend the majority of their first two years of medical school in the classroom and simulation training at the campus in Colton, California. Rotations and clerkships will take place in years three and four.
CUSM was established in 2015 with a significant gift from the Prime Healthcare Foundation and a unique public-private partnership between Arrowhead Regional Medical Center and the County of San Bernardino.
In 2018, CUSM welcomed its first medical class, and there are currently four medical doctor program classes registered with 520 students. CUSM also provides a 10-month master of biomedical sciences program. Every academic year, 60 students are accepted into the program.
