Who is Pete Rose? Why Banned from MLB’s ineligible list

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has removed Pete Rose from the permanent ineligible list.

Baseball’s all-time hit leader, who died at the age of 83 in September, had been banned since 1989 after an inquiry discovered that the veteran Cincinnati Reds star bet while playing and managing the organization.

Rose was banned from Major League Baseball in 1989 due to gambling allegations. He applied for reinstatement multiple times in the years leading up to his death in September.

In April, Manfred stated that he met with Trump to discuss immigration laws and how they would effect international players.

Rose was also a topic of conversation. “I met with President Trump two weeks ago … and one of the topics was Pete Rose, but I’m not going beyond that,” Manfred commented at the time.

“He said what he stated in public. I’m not going to get into detail about what the back and forth was.”

In March, Trump stated on Truth Social that he intended to “sign a complete pardon of Pete Rose, who should not have been gambling on baseball, but only bet on his team winning.”

“He never betted against himself or the opposing team. He had by far the most hits in baseball history and won the most games of any athlete in history.”
