Relatives of El Chapo Guzman Surrender to U.S.

Relatives of "El Chapo Guzman" surrender to the United States

Mexico – The family of Joaquín “El Chapo Guzmán” Loera arrived in the United States on foot, surrendering to the FBI at the San Diego, California, border crossing.

The incident could have implications for investigations into the Sinaloa Cartel and its leaders in Mexico.

A group of 17 relatives of Mexican drug trafficker Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, including his ex-wife Griselda López Pérez, mother of Ovidio Guzmán, voluntarily surrendered to US authorities, according to press reports on Monday (12.05.2025) in Mexico.

According to reports, the family members were met by agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the United States Marshals Service .

However, Mexican authorities have not provided any information on the case, while President Claudia Sheinbaum indicated that U.S. authorities should report on possible arrests.

The 17 relatives reportedly turned themselves in last Friday after crossing the San Ysidro border crossing between the Mexican city of Tijuana and San Diego, United States. They all crossed on foot with at least two suitcases each and a combined total of approximately $70,000, according to local reports.

Griselda López, the second wife of “El Chapo” and mother of Ovidio Guzmán López, known as “El Ratón,” linked to the “Los Chapitos” faction of the Sinaloa Cartel and imprisoned in Chicago, United States, has also been accused of her alleged involvement in drug trafficking and evading authorities.

This event follows the recent extradition of Ovidio Guzmán in September 2023 and the voluntary surrender of his brother Joaquín Guzmán López in July 2024. Both face drug trafficking charges and are reportedly negotiating plea deals with U.S. authorities.

The surrender of El Chapo’s relatives could have significant implications for the investigation into the Sinaloa Cartel and its leaders, especially in the context of the cooperation negotiations between the Mexican kingpin’s sons and U.S. authorities.
