Graham Greene, Oscar-Nominated Actor, Passes Away at 73

Graham Greene passed away at the age of 73. He was most known for his Oscar-nominated performance in Dances With Wolves as Kicking Bird (Ziŋtká Nagwáka).

According to Deadline, the actor passed away in a Toronto hospital on Monday, September 1, following a protracted illness.

He will always be missed because he was a great man of ethics, morals, and character. “You’re free at last,” said Michael Greene, Greene’s agent, in a statement.

According to Deadline, Michael Greene went on to say, “Susan Smith is meeting you at the gates of heaven,” alluding to the actor’s deceased former agent from 2013.

Greene’s big break came when he was chosen to play Kicking Bird in Kevin Costner’s 1990 film Dances With Wolves, which received 12 Oscar nominations, including one for Best Supporting Actor.

At the 1991 Academy Awards, the film took home seven prizes, including Best Picture and Best Director for Costner 70.

Considered a pioneer for Indigenous actors in Hollywood, Graham Greene’s other roles include 1992’s Thunderheart, starring the late Val Kilmer, and 1995’s Die Hard With a Vengeance, costarring Bruce Willis, 1999’s The Green Mile and 2004’s Transamerica.

Graham Greene most recently starred in FX’s Reservation Dogs and Marvel Studios’ Echo, which debuted on Disney+ last year.

In an interview with Reader’s Digest Canada in March 2017, Greene talked about how he fell into acting and said that if he hadn’t chosen to work in entertainment, he would most likely be a welder.

According to Greene, “I began my career as a carpenter, welder, draftsman, carpet layer, roadie, and audio tech.”

“These people keep me in the shade, give me food and water, take me over to where I say what I’m supposed to say, and then they take me back,” I thought when I first started acting.

Whoa, this is how a dog lives! Bonding with the horse he rode in the movie was one of Greene’s favorite memories from the Dances With Wolves set, which he discussed in the same interview.

Graham remarked, “He and I got on like a house on fire.” “This kid approached me on the final day of my shoot and said it had belonged to him; it turns out he had to sell it.

“Make sure this kid gets his horse back,” I told the producers after we finished filming. If necessary, deduct it from my pay.

Greene is survived by his grandson Tarlo, daughter Lilly Lazare-Greene, and wife Hilary Blackmore.
