ISLAMABAD (AP) — Turkish Airlines has resumed flights to Kabul’s international airport, the Afghan Taliban government stated. The carrier’s services had been discontinued after the fall of the Western-backed government, and it had been almost three years since then.
The first Turkish Airlines flight landed in Afghanistan on Tuesday, according to the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, and was welcomed by representatives of the government.
Turkish Airlines has resumed service between Istanbul and Kabul, with four weekly round-trip flights scheduled for Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.
When the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August 2021, as US and NATO soldiers left after two decades of war, all international airlines suspended flights to the country.
In January, Air Arabia resumed flights to Kabul’s international airport. In November 2023, FlyDubai became the first foreign airline to restart flights to Afghanistan.
Two Afghan airlines, Kam Air and Ariana Afghan Airlines, fly from Kabul to Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Moscow; Islamabad; and Istanbul.
