Jose Mourinho leaves Fenerbahce after one year as head coach—his position as head coach of Fenerbahce was terminated after just one season at the club.
The 62-year-old was hired by the Istanbul club in 2024, and he led the team to second place in the Turkish Super Lig, 11 points behind the reigning champions Galatasaray.
Fenerbahce was eliminated from the Turkish Cup in the quarterfinals and lost to Rangers in the Europa League round of 16.
Mourinho left just days after the club lost to Benfica in a playoff and missed out on a spot in the Champions League group phase. This means they will play in the Europa League this season.
Fenerbahce, who have four points from their first two league games of the season, will play again on Sunday when they travel to Genclerbirligi.
Mourinho’s departure occurs one day after head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s contract was terminated by Istanbul rivals Besiktas.
The Istanbul club’s only significant victory in the last ten years was the Turkish Cup in 2023, but they haven’t won the Turkish Super Lig since 2014.
Mourinho had a 59.7% win percentage in his 62 games as manager, winning 37 of them. Mourinho has won 26 championships in his more than two decades as manager.
He won the Champions League with Porto and Inter Milan, as well as league titles with Chelsea and Real Madrid.
Additionally, he managed Manchester United, which won the 2017 EFL Cup and Europa League, and Tottenham Hotspur.
He won the Europa Conference League in 2022, leading his former employer Roma to their first European title since 1961.
The following season, they lost to Sevilla in a penalty shootout in the Europa League final.
Mourinho said he would be “ready to go” back to the Premier League when he left Fenerbahce in October 2024.
